I’m Gerry Villani, a photographer based in Salem, Oregon, with a lifelong passion for photographing people, places, and the world around me.
My photographic background includes years of professional photojournalism, along with extensive travel throughout the United States and Asia. I continue to photograph portraits, models, travel, street scenes, and documentary subjects.
My approach to photographing people is natural and collaborative. I want the person in front of my camera to look like themselves – not like a heavily retouched version of themselves. I give direction when it is helpful, but I also like to let a subject’s personality and spontaneity come through.
I particularly enjoy environmental portraits and creating images that have a sense of place and story. My ongoing Asian Persuasion project reflects my interest in photographing people and everyday life throughout Asia.
I believe a good photograph is more than technically correct. It should make the viewer stop for a moment and see something they might otherwise have missed.
For models: I strive to make shoots relaxed, respectful, creative, and enjoyable. I discuss concepts and expectations beforehand, and I want the finished images to be something both the model and photographer are proud of.
If you are interested in collaborating, feel free to contact me. I am always interested in meeting interesting people and creating interesting photographs.
Have Camera, Will Travel.
